Part of the excitement of detecting on a battlefield is the prospect of never really being quite sure what you are going to find when the detector starts to whine. Every time one must dig carefully, not just because of the risk of disturbing live ordnance, but also because we don't want to miss something small - which could be of great significance.
In this case the find, from the Gothic line in Italy is a US canteen made by the firm Vollrath in 1943, clearly showing signs of having been burnt at some time.
