The helmets on this page were discarded by their owners after they surrendered and took the long walk into captivity. Above left is an M42 Politzei helmet, similar to the helmets worn by the 4th SS "Politzei" Division, although this helmet is not from this particular unit. The zinc rivets that hold the liner in the shell are clearly visible in the picture above.

Right; another German POW has left his helmet for the detector to find 61 years later. Another M42 this helmet clearly shows that it was worn by a soldier of a Luftwaffe Field Division. By the autumn of 1944 being in the Luftwaffe was no longer the ticket to the bright blue yonder in an aircraft, but was the very down to earth vocation of an infantryman. Fortunately for the owners of both of these helmets they saw the wars end and the beginning of peace.
