Above; There is very little left of this weapon, but it is a British No.4 Lee Enfield MkI rifle. It was lost or discarded by a soldier of either the Suffolk, East Yorkshire or South Lancashire Regiment during their assault on the town of Overloon in October 1944. These units were part of the British 3rd Division on the left flank of the 11th Armoured Division during the battle. There is no wooden furniture left on the weapon after it's 64 years in the soil. Although the barrel appears slightly bent there is no indication that this is why the weapon was discarded. The 3rd Divisions assault on Overloon was fiercely contested by soldiers of 1st Battalion Fallschirmjäger Regiment 21.
