Roman numeral III-Mannesmannröhren-Werke, Düsseldorf-Rath, Düsseldorf (dbh).

Roman numeral IV-Hoesch A.G. Abteilung Werk Dortmund, Eberhardstraße 12, Dortmund (asx).

DWM-Liefergemeinschaft Dornbirn, Ludwig Rigger, Dornbirn (Vorarlberg). Note also the SS runes on this cartridge. This factory was producing cartridges for Himmlers SS, but only for a short period. Hence these are nearly always found with 1939 or 39 dates.

Having displayed some of the various Allied small arms ammunition head stamps we have split the display up so that this page shows some of the German head stamps found in various locations over the years.

These cartridges were all used during WW2 and although the items with Roman numerals may appear older you can clearly see they are dated 1939.

The "S" refers to "Patronenhulse S" which is the model of cartridge. i.e. It denotes brass alloy with 67% copper content. Cases stamped with an "S*" have a 72% copper alloy. Roman numerals will only be found on copper washed steel cases and they denote not only the steel supplier but plating company as well. Dates will range from late 1930s until 1941 when lacquering took over.
