Above: Even today very few outsiders have visited the former battlefields of the Kurland pocket, part of Latvia. The areas where the fighting took place are mostly dense swamp covered forests and searching in such areas demands stamina as well as perseverance. This years expedition to the area by some of our colleagues has resulted in the recovery of 3 German soldiers remains.
Note that despite the condition of these helmets the decal was still clearly attached to the one on the left of the picture (see inset). The shrapnel damage to the second helmet as well as the hit to the canteen testament to the battle.
Below: The identity disk (erkennungsmarke) of one of the soldiers being in such good condition that the Volksbund will be able to identify the owner. Thus it is hoped that three more families will be able to know the fate of their forefathers.
